A past return can be corrected — and sometimes it puts money back in your pocket.
Filed returns aren't always final. CRA allows taxpayers to request adjustments to previously filed returns — typically up to 10 years back. Whether there was an error, a missed credit, or new information that changes the picture, an amendment may reduce what you owe or generate a refund.
PTC Canada reviews past returns with fresh eyes, identifies what was missed or incorrectly reported, and manages the T1-ADJ process with CRA. We also handle situations where CRA has reassessed you and you need to respond.
- T1-ADJ (Request for Adjustment) preparation
- Missed credits — disability, medical, tuition, home office
- Correcting income that was over- or under-reported
- RRSP over-contribution corrections
- Responding to CRA reassessments
- Up to 10 years of prior returns reviewed
Common reasons clients amend past returns
Missed Credits or Deductions
Disability tax credits, medical expenses, home office costs, and charitable donations are commonly overlooked — and can be claimed retroactively.
Incorrect Income Reported
Slips that arrived late, employer T4 errors, or income that was categorized incorrectly — all fixable through an amendment.
CRA Reassessment Response
If CRA disagrees with your filing, you have the right to respond with supporting documentation. We prepare and submit that response on your behalf.
Frequently asked questions
Generally, individuals can request adjustments to returns filed in the past 10 years. The 10-year period runs from the end of the calendar year being amended.
Not automatically. Requesting a legitimate adjustment is a normal part of the tax system. Well-documented amendments are processed routinely. PTC Canada ensures every adjustment is properly supported before it's submitted.
We can still review it and prepare an amendment. We'll access your return history through CRA, identify what was filed, and determine if an adjustment is warranted.
